Solid-Ink, Just as Good as Laser Thursday, May 28, 2009
The assault of solid-ink technology on the imaging market is continuing to gain momentum in the industry. With the latest introduction of ColorQube, the Xerox portfolio is growing with these types of devices, building on the successful releases of the Phaser 8560, Phaser 8860 series printers and MFP’s. However, critics argue that images won’t have the longevity or durability vs. traditional laser technology.

In a May 2009, a comprehensive study from Buyers Lab (BLI) (a private 3rd party company used for imaging evaluations) found no evidence that suggested solid-ink had any less “image permanence” than that of laser technology. BLI evaluated the Xerox ColorQube 9203, Canon ImageRunner C5180, HP CM6040f and the Ricoh MP C5000 – all utilizing laser based systems except the ColorQube. They judged the machines with four tests: abrasion/smudge resistance, offsetting, document feeding and writeability. Multiple samples that were taken from both laser and solid-ink devices scored the exact same performance ratings. Simply put, there was no difference between the two technologies. In fact, BLI went on to summarize that their findings “clearly demonstrate that Xerox’s solid-ink imaging technology provide image permanence that is comparable to that of color laser imaging technology and is well suited to standard office use.”

Free Xerox ColorQube Samples Thursday, May 21, 2009
There’s lots of buzz these days around the Xerox ColorQube, the revolutionary new device that has the industry turning heads with its unique solid ink technology. For the uninitiated, ColorQube takes a queue from the successful Xerox Phaser solid ink line such as the Phaser 8560 and Phaser 8860, transforming it into a very impressive multifunction device. Not a big deal for most, except for the fact that now color costs can now be done at less than a penny per page with some of the service plans available through your local Xerox Sales Agent. Yes, you read that correctly…less than a penny for color. These costs can vary, so be sure to consult with your local Xerox Sales Representative for specific details.

Given the hype and early success of this product, ColorQube is difficult to acquire in most markets. Major cities have had the first roll out, but lead times are still several weeks. If you’re curious about the quality of output, send your .pdf file to info@hbsx.com and we will gladly send you a sample print from the new ColorQube. Files will be shipped to you at no charge and please allow a week or so for delivery. Also note that this offer is only for continental U.S. customers.

GREEN OFFICE PRINTING Thursday, January 3, 2008
With a green initiative coming around every corner these days, probably the least likely you’ve heard about is right in front of you at work everyday. Your reliable little friend that churns out paper like a pasta maker is not only costing you a pretty penny, but it is also filling up the landfills. Studies show that after after 100,000 pages printed, a typical laser printer generates over 157 pounds of waste due to cartridges, fusers and imaging units. Simply put, a laser printer produces a staggering 90% more waste than alternative print engines like solid ink.

How about when you go to fix your desktop printer? If you’re like most people, you throw it away and get another one. Desktops have gotten to be so inexpensive it’s easier to replace, rather than fixing them. Manufacturers have a done a wonderful job of “reverse marketing” to the public when it comes to getting their products in the hands of consumers. Why buy toner that cost a couple of hundred bucks when you can buy a brand new printer for a few dollars more?

How can you do your part?

1.Migrate to multifunction devices
2.If you have to buy a printer, use solid ink printers
3.Don’t replace laser printers when they break down, repair them

It may be hard for many people reading this to actually consolidate into more of a workgroup device because of habit (or sheer laziness). Yes it is more convenient, but Mom making your lunch everyday was too. New technology can print at certain times, and some even print securely so you don’t have to worry about unwanted eyes seeing confidential documents. Also, many users will be pleasantly surprised on the speed and features available on a multifunction device that they can’t get on their desktop.

At the end of the day you’re probably not going to win a Nobel Prize for “going green” in your office, but the little things add up. Finally, a closing note from our friend Gabby, an elementary school kid who has a unique perspective on this topic.
